Sensors: the quiet part of a smart home
Motion, door and light sensors let the home act without being asked. Here is where each one is useful.

Motion sensors
Best in places you pass through with full hands: hallways, stairs, the store room, the bathroom at night. The light comes on as you enter and goes off a few minutes after you leave.
Door and window sensors
A small two-part magnet that knows when something is open. Useful on the main door, the balcony door, and the medicine cupboard. Pair it with a routine: if the balcony door opens while the AC is on, pause the AC.
Light sensors
They measure how bright a room is, so lights only come on when it is actually dim rather than at a fixed hour. Good for rooms with big windows.
Helpful, not creepy
Tixa sensors do not record anything. They send a yes or a no to the hub: someone is here, the door is open, it is dark. That is all the home needs to be useful.
