Smart home glossary: 20 terms explained in plain English
Twenty useful smart home terms, including circuits, M plate sizes, hubs, scenes, two-way control and the difference between Wi-Fi and internet.
Quick answer: A useful smart home quote tells you what each device controls, how it connects and which functions it supports. These 20 terms help you read that quote and ask precise questions.
Controls and wiring
Load: the electrical equipment controlled by an output, such as a light circuit or fan.
Circuit: a wired electrical path. Several bulbs on one switched circuit may share one control.
Channel: an independently controlled output; its supported load and rating depend on the model.
M size: a modular plate format, such as 4M or 8M. It is not the number of switches.
Retrofit: adding controls to suitable existing wiring and boards, subject to a site check.
Neutral: a supply conductor required by some devices. An electrician must check the selected product’s wiring needs.
Heavy-duty output: an output specified for a suitable higher-load appliance. Confirm its rating and the appliance’s starting current.
Two-way control: controlling the same circuit from two positions. Confirm the compatible wiring and models.
Dimmer: a control that changes a compatible light’s output. The driver and light must also support dimming.
Fan regulator: a speed control for a supported fan type. A conventional fan dimmer does not regulate BLDC speed.
Connections and automation
Wi-Fi: a local wireless network; being connected to Wi-Fi does not necessarily mean internet access is available.
Internet: the connection beyond the home network, often needed for remote or cloud functions.
Zigbee: a device-network technology. Tixa HomeSync products need a compatible hub and setup.
Hub: a controller connecting supported devices to their network or platform. It is not automatically included in every installation.
Local control: control within the home or at the device, subject to model and network requirements.
Remote control: operating a supported device from outside the home; connectivity and account requirements apply.
Scene: a saved group of supported actions triggered together.
Routine: actions associated with a supported time, condition or event.
Sensor: a device that reports a supported condition, such as motion or a door opening. Placement and hub requirements vary.
Energy estimate: an app calculation based on inputs or operation; it differs from readings taken by a dedicated meter.
