Retrofit vs rewiring: the honest comparison for Indian homes
Compare retrofit and planned wiring by site condition, installation scope, local control and expansion rather than blanket promises.
Quick answer: Retrofit controls are worth considering when you want to reuse suitable existing wiring. Planned wiring changes can make sense in a new build, a major renovation or when the existing circuits cannot support the desired controls. A site survey decides the practical choice.
When retrofit is useful

When to plan wiring changes
During construction, you can plan switch positions, power supplies, neutral conductors, curtain points and network coverage before finishes are complete. Existing unsafe wiring, an added appliance or a relocated control may require electrical work even with a retrofit product.
Compare the same scope
Circuit plan: list lights, fans, ACs, geysers, sockets and shared two-way controls.
Installation work: request the specific cable, switchbox, civil and finishing work included.
Control behaviour: ask what works at the wall, on the local network and over the internet.
System dependencies: identify any required hub, router or controller and what happens if it is unavailable.
Future changes: check expansion capacity and whether later modules remain compatible.
Does one approach always keep working offline?
No single rule covers every system. Internet loss, Wi-Fi loss and a power cut are different conditions. Confirm the selected model’s local controls and where schedules run. A powered smart device still needs electricity, and some app or voice functions require an internet service.
What about renting and cost?
Get the landlord’s permission for fixed electrical changes. Reversal costs depend on the original wiring and installation. Compare complete written estimates, including labour and accessories, rather than assuming retrofit always costs less or can always be removed without work.
